To foster the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to have an inclusive, sustainable recovery in the region, the Food and Agribusiness working group believes in the opportunity for more public-private collaboration to target our main challenges.
Everyday agricultural investment became more important and relevant for governments, the private sector, and civil society to commit to working on ways to ensure that the Americas become a food and agriculture powerhouse. The agricultural sector relies heavily on natural resources and climate conditions and remains highly vulnerable to external shocks from climate change, natural threats, disease, and pests. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated an urgent need to shield the food system from external shocks by making it more resilient.
Agriculture and food systems need to keep up with technological progress, particularly in the Americas, which would increase its potential for growth to become a global provider. Other important areas to focus on should be talent development and sharing best practices in different areas. Farmers need a well-equipped toolbox to supply society's social, environmental, and economic needs through the agricultural value chain.
International trade and participation in global value chains (GVCs) are critical drivers of employment and incomes for the agricultural sector worldwide. Agricultural participation in GVCs is a crucial driver of economic transformation and growth with strong knock-on effects for livelihood improvement, production growth, and productivity improvements.
