ABD 2023 Plenary Meeting
Greater Collaboration and Shared Objectives

 

Washington, DC, September 6, 2023 - An ABD Plenary Meeting took place in a hybrid format – virtually and at the IDB Headquarters in Washington, DC – with the participation of over 200 esteemed members.

The event featured a compelling keynote presentation by Ilan Goldfajn, President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), who outlined his vision and key priorities for the IDB during his tenure.

President Ilan highlighted that over the past decade, the IDB has witnessed ABD companies and associations coming together, united around critical policy recommendations.

These recommendations have been presented to Heads of State during the Summits of the Americas, underscoring the importance of private sector engagement in regional development.

III Meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Group on Our Sustainable and Green Future

ABD had a prominent presence at the III Meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Group on Our Sustainable and Green Future of the GRIC, the Summit Implementation Review Group. The main focus of this meeting was on agriculture and the development of climate-smart food systems.

Ashley Martin McKeon, Director of Regenerative Agriculture at Cargill and a member of ABD's Food and Agribusiness Working Group, actively participated in discussions related to strategies aimed at promoting public investment in agricultural innovation in collaboration with the private sector and multilateral mechanisms.

First Virtual Hemispheric Preparatory Meeting for the VI Ministerial Meeting of ECPA

ABD was a prominent participant in the First Virtual Hemispheric Preparatory Meeting for the VI Ministerial Meeting of ECPA (Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas). This important event will take place in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, in March 2024, under the theme "Renewable Energies in the Americas: Integration and Innovation".

Gaelle Burkhart of The AES Corporation and Chair of ABD's Energy and Natural Resources Working Group played a key role in sharing policy recommendations that members have developed to promote investments in the transition to clean energy. Additionally, the working group is actively working on a proposal for ABD's participation in the ministerial meeting, which will include plenaries and side events.

Second Meeting of the Clean Energy Technical Group of the Joint Summit Working Group

With ABD's participation, the Second Meeting of the Clean Energy Technical Group of the Joint Summit Working Group was held, organized by the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS), as part of the implementation process of commitments made at the IX Summit of the Americas.

Christiaan Gischler, lead energy specialist at the IDB, described the collaborative work with countries in the Americas for the production of green hydrogen and decarbonization of heavy industries.

Luis Sarrás, General Director of Green Hydrogen, International Business at The AES Corporation, leader of ABD's Energy and Natural Resources Working Group, presented the private sector's perspective on the transition to zero-emission systems.

XII Regular Meeting of the Ibero-American and Caribbean Network for Regulatory Improvement

On October 3rd and 4th, ABD participated in the XII Meeting of the Ibero-American and Caribbean Network for Regulatory Improvement in San Jose, Costa Rica, focused on regulatory policy and its relationship with the environmental and climate goals of administrations in the region.

Susan Suárez, from the Inter-American Coalition for Regulatory Convergence, represented #ABD on the panel "Recent advances in public consultation in the region," which gathered experiences from various countries in the implementation of consultation strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of public policy action.

The meeting was organized by the Network, which comprises over 10 countries in the region, as well as Spain and Portugal, and aims to strengthen regulatory quality.
